The History of Nederburg in South Africa
Nederburg was established in 1791 by Philippus Wolvaart, a Dutch settler who purchased a farm in Paarl, Western Cape. He named it Nederburg, and with the help of a few workers, planted the first vineyards, laying the foundation for what would become one of South Africa’s most celebrated wineries. The estate changed hands over time but continued to evolve. A major turning point came in the 20th century with the arrival of Günter Brözel in 1956, who served as cellar master for over 30 years. Under his leadership, Nederburg became known for innovation, quality, and award-winning wines, including the creation of the iconic Baronne blend in 1973.
Over the decades, Nederburg grew into a leading name in South African wine, both locally and internationally. It became famous for its annual Nederburg Auction (launched in 1975), which showcased rare and exceptional wines to collectors and connoisseurs from around the world. Nederburg’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and storytelling through wine has earned it numerous accolades, including recognition from international competitions. Today, Nederburg continues to produce a wide range of wines—from everyday favourites to premium vintages—remaining a proud symbol of South African winemaking heritage.
