The History of Bakers in South Africa

The history of Bakers dates back to 1851, when John Frederick Baumann, a young German immigrant, arrived in South Africa and began working as a baker in Durban. In 1881, Baumann and his family established Baumann’s Bakery, which would later become known as Bakers Limited. The bakery grew steadily, known for its commitment to quality and innovation. In 1915, Bakers introduced South Africa’s first packaged biscuits, a major milestone that helped shape the country’s biscuit industry. Over time, the company became a trusted household name, synonymous with timeless products like Lemon Creams, Tennis Biscuits, and Romany Creams.

Throughout the 20th century, Bakers expanded its product range and reach across South Africa, becoming deeply embedded in local culture. Many of its biscuits became staples in lunchboxes, family tea times, and celebrations. In 1999, Bakers was acquired by National Brands Limited, a division of AVI Ltd, allowing the brand to further modernize while preserving its heritage. Today, Bakers remains one of South Africa’s most iconic food brands, proudly carrying its slogan: “Bakers – with goodness baked in.” From humble beginnings in a small Durban bakery, it has grown into a symbol of quality and nostalgia for generations of South Africans.
