The history of Amarula in South Africa
Amarula is a proudly South African cream liqueur made from the fruit of the African marula tree, also known as the "elephant tree." Its history is closely tied to South Africa’s natural heritage, traditional knowledge, and innovative spirit.
Amarula was first launched as a clear spirit in 1983, and by 1989, it evolved into the creamy liqueur that’s now internationally recognized. It is produced by Distell, a major South African alcoholic beverage company. The marula fruit, which grows wild in parts of southern Africa, is harvested by local communities during the summer months (mainly February and March), then naturally fermented and distilled before being aged in oak barrels for two years. After aging, it is blended with fresh cream to create the smooth, caramel-like drink known today. Amarula has since become one of South Africa's most famous exports and is enjoyed in over 100 countries worldwide. The brand is also known for its conservation efforts, particularly in supporting elephant conservation, aligning with the symbolic link between elephants and marula trees.
